What is Cervicalgia?
Anyone, irrespective of age can suffer from Cervicalgia or neck pain. The pain does not spread to the arms, it remains restricted. However, Cervicalgia does not impose any serious issue; but causes discomfort and should be treated on time.
The neck is known as the cervical spine and it protects the spinal cord and supports the head so that we can maintain a good range of motion. The neck has nerves, bones, muscles, ligaments, and tendons, and these all help a neck maintain flexibility. However, once the flexibility gets disturbed due to constant or sharp pressure, bad posture, or strain in holding the head upright for long hours, it causes discomfort and consistent pain in the neck. This pain or discomfort is known as Cervicalgia. It only occurs in the neck, not the arms or lower back area.
Causes of Cervicalgia
Cervicalgia can occur for various reasons. Most of the common reasons are as follows.
● Poor posture of sitting
● Holding your neck at an awkward angle for a long time (while you are sleeping, or working in front of your computer)
● Injuries to your neck due to car accident or sports injury
● Long-term stress on your neck muscle that leads to strains on the neck area
● Poor bone health due to arthritis or osteoporosis. The reason why, older people have a greater risk of suffering from Cervicalgia
Consistent pressure on the spine, diseases or conditions like meningitis, kyphosis, slouched/rounded shoulder, certain bodybuilding routines, excessive cycling, reckless sports activities, or spinal infection can cause Cervicalgia.
Symptoms of Cervicalgia
In general, Cervicalgia is diagnosed with consistent pain in the neck region. The pain can be sharp, stabbing, inflammatory, or dull. But, it would be a persistent pain. How Is Cervicalgia Treated?
Cervicalgia is treated according to the stage of the pain. However, the treatment helps relieve pain and promote better movement in your neck. The pain management physician decides the best treatment for you according to your pain intensity and level of discomfort. General Cervicalgia treatment includes pain medications, muscle relaxers, physical therapy, TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation), steroid injections, and other alternative therapies. Surgery is the last resort that pain management physicians suggest to undergo.
